johnloguk > 18.4.08 - Hands Across the Water. I think I've mentioned before that Friday is always a manic day for me, not enough hours in it etc. Today was even more so than usual, so when a friend asked if I wanted to meet up in town this evening I was more than happy. Then I realised that I hadn't taken a photo yet, so while I was waiting for my friend to arrive I fired off a whole load of shots along the waterside. It was incredibly windy, and as usual I didn't have my tripod, so most of the shots went straight in the bin. Some worked great, but were similar to ones I've used as DPs before, so I decided to experiment. This is basically a B&W version of the watercolour effect, with some tweaking of contrast and grain. I just love that scuplture of the leaping figures, and from this footbridge they frame different things, while appearing to be holding hands. Anyway, if it's rubbish I blame the alcohol :)

Other shots from this evening are scattered across the My Hometown, Watercolour and B&W galleries if you have the time to check them out. I'm particularly pleased with this one as an experiment; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4518270_XDZuH#281387936_25ZBU-A-LB
johnloguk > 8.5.08 - Angel of Death? I hadn't had time to think of a DP today, been one of those manic days again, also incredibly hot (well hot for the UK in early May, mid 70s). Just before sunset I was still out working, and realised that I was very close to this old cemetery. I had never walked round it before, but the thought of winding down in this peaceful place was too good to ignore. So when I'd finished I took my camera and went for a stroll. The light was beautiful, filtering through the trees, and there was no one else around. I took several shots of nice flowers and blossom in the setting sun, but didn't want to intrude by taking photos of graves. Then I spotted this angel, and thought she would make a great DP. I played around with some fairly gothic looking black and whites, but this is by far my favourite image.
johnloguk > 27.5.08 - I snatched a brief photography session around the Cathedral precinct this afternoon. It was grey and drizzly, but I was keen to see what I could make of the conditions. I've added several images to my Watercolour Gallery here: http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4518270_XDZuH#302451809_T9HAu

and one to my Hometown Gallery here;

but the more I looked at this I wanted it to be my Daily. I can't look at old cottages like this without thinking about the people that have lived there, and the lives they led. This building is several hundred years old, so many generations will have lived and died here. Kings and Queens have walked (or ridden) this way, battles have been fought here, not to mention the myriad of experiences of all families from the dawn of time. The Cathedral is immediately to the right of this shot, so the people that lived here will have had one of the world's great views out of their windows too. Of course people continue to live here, and so the story continues......
johnloguk > 2.7.08 - Time Out.

Heavy rain was forecast for today, so I thought I'd take the chance of a walk this morning before it came. One of the joys of being self-employed is you can do this occasionally, and I know there will be plenty of late evenings working so I don't feel guilty when I take an hour out like this. It helps keep me sane :)

The sky looked quite forbidding behind me, but we only got a few drops of rain in the end and we might even get a nice sunset later. But I'm posting this in a gap between games at Wimbledon while I have a chance. Nadal is beating Murray, but Andy isn't as far behind as he was the other night when he eventually won, so I still have faith!
johnloguk > 21.5.08 - "Night Flower". It might not be apparent from my photos, especially this one, but I am a huge sports nut. I've just watched the most amazing game of football and I'm now emotionally drained. It was the European Champions League Final, with two English clubs competing for the biggest prize in club football. Everyone expected a boring tactical game, but it was actually an all guns blazing battle, and survival of the fittest. Manchester United finally beat Chelsea in the Moscow rain, after extra time and a penalty shoot-out. The game ebbed and flowed, chances came and went, fans swapped shirts with Russian troops in the crowd, it was an incredible evening.

This flower is my attempt to convey the emotions of the evening. A beautiful thing, left drained at the end, but still beautiful :)
johnloguk > 4.5.08 - The Yellow Peril! I put a photo of a field of Oilseed Rape in my Odds'n'Ends gallery a while back, but this is a bit more personal. If it was a field of daffodils we'd all be going "aaaahhhh isn't that pretty", but with Oilseed Rape your nose and eyes are screaming at you well before you get chance to appreciate the colour. This field is a few hundred yards away, where I've taken many of my Cathedral sunsets photos, but I can actually smell the pollen as I type this. I was holding my breath as I took the photo, and couldn't wait to get back into some fresher air. Many people suffer far more than I do, it must be terrible for them to be so close to this stuff, but there is nothing we can do about it. Pass the antihistamines :)

Some of you will remember my industrial dereliction photos that I posted a few weeks ago from an old factory. Well they are now demolishing it, and I've added some shots to the gallery here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4693092_4Y6PF#P-6-15
johnloguk > 9.4.08 - It's only a pigeon but.... Oh how I've agonised over choosing my DP today. I took more photos that I really like in 30 minutes over lunch today than I would normally take in a week. The changing light, the blue skies and bubbly white cumulus, the clear air, the colours and the subject matter in town today was stunning. But one of my stated aims of the DPs is to get out of "my comfort zone of landscapes", so the pigeon wins. He was actually a very characterful fellow for a pigeon, taking an unhealthy interest in my "bacon, brie and cranberry wrap" (unhealthy for him that is!). He strutted his stuff back and forth, ever wary of the family of peregrine falcons that hunt pigeons in Lincoln these days ("come on you falcons"), but he had to make do with someone else's cold chips.

Here is my favourite "pretty shot" from today; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4222541_LCXPH#277123626_q9rww-A-LB

This is me being "arty and profound" today; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4333863_ympF9#277129460_TydAx-A-LB

And this is my geographical shot from today! http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4328734_9ZqLR#277132057_t2Uw7-A-LB
johnloguk > 5.4.08 - There's a storm coming! It's been a long time since I had a "big sky" shot in my Dailies, so it was opportune when today threw up a whole bunch of them. The wind moved round to the north overnight, and it is bitterly cold today despite the sunshine. These big storms keep blowing through every few minutes, bringing stinging hail and freezing rain. This shot was taken a few minutes from my home, I actually took 10 before the weather drove me back in. It was a struggle to capture the dynamism in the storm, the clouds were bubbling like a speeded up film, and the light was changing by the second. Typically my first shot was the best! I've cropped it a bit and adjusted the levels, but this is basically what I saw. I left the blue sky in because I wanted to convey the whole scene, rather than go for a textbook image. As I've been typing this the weather outside has changed half a dozen times!
johnloguk > 7.3.08 - And now for something completely different, as someone once said! This is my old black lab "Kelly", who is sadly no longer with us, but who lived to the ripe old age of 16 and crammed more into her life than most humans. She went on camping trips in all seasons, climbed literally hundreds of big mountains in Britain, and was pretty adept at laying infront of the fire too. But her main claim to fame was her ability to con crisps out of bar staff in any pub she went into, just by rolling her eyes! Now I know how to do this type of portrait I might try a few more, so long as I don't forget what I did!

I've just added a gallery of photos showing some of Kelly's travels; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4473097_hTdmf/3#263081475
18.4.08 - Hands Across the Water.
