johnloguk > 9.6.08 - Quick change of plans folks :) (the proper name for this is a Triptych of course) This is actually something I was working on late last night, as part of a separate project. I got the idea from a wonderful series of triple landscapes that I saw on the net yesterday. My thoughts are that each frame should stand up as an image on it's own, although this was one photo originally, taken in February. I'm putting it up as my Daily because I know I've got a very busy evening ahead and might not get home, let alone on the computer, until very very late. Keep it warm for me :)

A bird flies silently by, no sound but the gentle breeze in the trees. But then again, where are the mountains? Where is the beer, the sport on TV, the snow and all the other things I love? Ah well. If there is such a thing as perfect idyll then it does come in many forms, and it will be different for everyone at different times. I just happened to pop home for my lunch today and got the urge to make another planet. johnloguk > 20.6.08 - Art From The Heart :) It seems to me that most people miss the point of good beer. It is more than a means to get wasted, and it should be much more than a social lubricant. It has a heritage, it speaks of the land where it was brewed, and above all there is an almost infinite variety of flavours. These are just four of the wonderful beers I've had in the last few weeks, and I thought I'd share them with you before I take them to the recycling centre tomorrow. There is a stunning Lithuanian wheat beer. A Czech black lager. The Brakspears Triple is a real treat for hopheads like me, and the Port Stout is simply a world classic. For the techies; I took this on the window sill, with the sunset illuminating from behind, the flash to show off the labels, and a dose of my watercolour treatment to bring out the character of the bottles. I just wish I'd thought of the quote myself :)
johnloguk > 11.6.08 - "Heaven is a Place on Earth". No not the dodgy 80s song by Belinda Carlisle, but a lovely old pub with a row of handpumps like this! No fewer than 12 wonderful beers, all brewed by small Craft Brewers, with the corporate fizz relegated to the ends of the bar. Appearances can be deceptive though, because this is a relatively new conversion, although it looks like it could have been there forever. I experimented with colour curves after converting to B&W, as I wanted to do something different to my usual B&Ws or Sepia conversion. I can recommend the "Black Pearl", an Irish style stout that knocks modern Guinness into a cocked hat! johnloguk > 10.6.08 - This was the sunset at the end of my road last night, and I nearly missed it! I've been so good lately at always having my camera with me, but last night I went out without it and nearly paid for it big time. I think I must have sub-consciously decided that after posting my "triptych" early for yesterday, that I had no more need to carry the camera. This sunset developed very quickly, actually after the sun had dipped below the horizon, and there I was sans camera. I managed to hurry home just in time as the colours were starting to fade. I even contemplated another shot through my window, but decided that I would risk running to the end of the road for a better shot. I fired a few off, hand held on auto, no time to fiddle about, and within a few minutes it had gone. At it's height the whole sky was full of colour, not just the north-west quadrant. I just wish I had been able to get further than the end of my road and maybe get some more interesting foreground silhouettes, but it was my fault for forgetting my camera in the first place. johnloguk > 30.4.08 - Some days I wonder if my brain actually works, or if it is just there to keep my ears apart! I was complimenting myself on how much work I'd got done today, then I looked at my diary and realised that I'd forgotten to take my car in for a service. I thought it was booked in tomorrow, but no, I was a moron instead :) I decided the only thing to do was to apologise to the garage in person, and sort out another date face to face, rather than hide my embarrassment over the phone. This worked out well in the end, we all had a laugh and I managed to get a few shots in this nearby park. It was pouring with rain, and had been most of the day, so I didn't have much time to line the shots up properly or the camera would have drowned. I'm amazed how quickly everything has turned green. It will soon be summer!
johnloguk > 23.6.08 - OK, this is my first "guess what it is" Daily. Could it be a pollen grain viewed through a scanning electron microscope? Or plankton? Belly button fluff? Martian bacteria? Over to you guys, wake me up when you get it :) For those of you that missed the answer when I put it in the comments - this is actually a fabric softener ball for putting in the dryer with your washing :)
johnloguk > 19.4.08 - The Condemned Cell. I played the tourist guide today for a friend, and one of the places we visited was the Old Prison in Lincoln Castle. The exhibit has changed a lot since I was last there, and I was very impressed, not to mention profoundly moved. The cells had presentations using shadow play, as different prisoners told their stories. This cell was where condemned prisoners spent their last night, and the shadow play was of a woman pleading her innocence to the priest who came to prepare her for death. She was the first person to be executed in private, previously it was a public spectacle. She was convicted of poisoning her husband, and was executed by the "long drop" method of hanging. As an aside, this method was invented in this prison. Years later an ex-lodger confessed to the murder, so her death was a terrible mis-carriage of justice. As someone passionately against the death penalty this re-affirmed my belief. It was interesting to watch the reaction of other visitors. The adults were visibly moved, and the children were talking about "the ghosts" in the cells.
johnloguk > 17.6.08 - Timeless Planet. Today has been a weird day, busy busy busy, lots of good things done, but one big frustration - my internet connection! Every time I get logged on the connection fails. It has settled down a bit this evening, allowing me to upload some photos, but I apologise for not getting to comment on as many galleries as I would have liked. I love surfing Smugmug, especially the Dailies. The variety, skill and imagination on show is mind boggling at times, it always brightens my day. Anyway, before the connection breaks again, my session in the old churchyard yesterday has lingered in my mind all day today. Ah well. If there is such a thing as perfect idyll then it does come in many forms, and it will be different for everyone at different times. I just happened to pop home for my lunch today and got the urge to make another planet. Then I had to think of something profound to use as a caption, maybe I should get back to work :)
