johnloguk > 15.6.08 - Oil on Canvas? I've really been at a loss for a Daily today, and for the first time in ages never actually took a shot all day. I can't say that I've been really busy, just catching up with stuff really. I suppose I was being really lazy, hoping that a nice sunset would appear and rescue me late in the day. But that was yesterday, and today just went out with a grey whimper.

This photo was taken in Switzerland back in '96. It was originally a transparency, and I scanned it at much too low a resolution. I remember trying to sharpen it up digitally, but all that happened was that the image degraded further. Then I noticed that a pattern was appearing in the background, and when I pushed it further it started to look like an old oil painting on canvas, or even parchment. I turned it into monochrome, experimented with the tone, and decided to leave it like this.

I don't like "cheating", but I suppose it still reflects the sort of day I've had. I also like the subject matter, because this represents one of my main beliefs. Nothing ventured nothing gained. I've climbed lots of mountains in poor weather and never got a view. But every now and again, if you persist in going up in bad weather, the weather will eventually break and give you a piece of magic like this. It looks better at XL2 by the way.

It also reminds me of one of my favourite quotes; "if you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room" :)
johnloguk > 26.2.08 - Low Barlings. I was out of town this morning and took a detour to visit this ruined 12th century abbey. This bit of wall, and a few hummocks in the ground, are all that remains of a building that once dominated the surrounding flatlands. It looks beautiful and sunny in the photo, but there was a bitter wind blowing. What we call a "lazy wind". It can't be bothered to go round you, so it goes straight through you!
johnloguk > 27.6.08 - Beauty beneath our feet. This image was promted by an incident when I was out photographing with Steve yesterday. We were walking through some wildflowers when I spotted a tiny orchid. Steve said that he would never have seen it if I hadn't pointed it out. I had to be honest and agreed that if it hadn't been for the Dailies I wouldn't have noticed it either.

This silly little project has made me look at so many things with different eyes. I thought that I saw lots of details that others didn't see in landscapes, but I always tended to look for the big view, the dramatic sky, the snowcapped peak. Now I tend to look down a lot more, and a good job too or I would miss beautiful scenes like this, hidden down deep amongst the long summer grasses.

I thought long and hard about how to present this, and opted for a simple frame. Tomorrow morning I'm in town, and I will try to get some more street shots. Variety is certainly the spice of the Dailies :)
johnloguk > 28.5.08 - The Shock of The New. Many of my photos are of old buildings, because very few new ones get me as excited as this one. This is The Collection, Lincoln's newest, and finest, Museum. The exhibits are great, but the building itself is just as interesting to me. The use of materials, especially the textures of the different stones and bricks, and the wonderful use of space and light. This double shot is designed to show the use of space and natural light, shapes and textures. The viewer will judge how successful I've been. Oh, and it is all free of charge :)

johnloguk > 24.5.08 - One for the laydeees! I love my walk into town, it goes through the most beautiful parts of Lincoln. Unfortunately, it also passes some wonderful shops, so if I'm not careful it can take me a heck of a long time to get anywhere. This is just one of many beautiful old buildings on the aptly named "Steep Hill", and I couldn't resist doing one of Hillary's hip-shots of my reflection in the window. I'm a bit concerned about the sign declaring sugar free chocolate, surely that is a contradiction in terms?
johnloguk > 14.3.08 - Sorry, I couldn't resist doing another one of these, I promise tomorrow's DP will be something different. I went for a walk in this park at lunchtime, fully intending to take some flower shots for my DP. I got some nice ones, but when I saw how this came out I just had to post it. I like the shot anyway, but I must admit that it was partly an exercise in seeing if I could repeat yesterdays effect.
johnloguk > 18.6.08 - Not even a third of the man I used to be :)

I knew I had to do another SP soon or I'd have to face the wrath of MB (only joking Mary Beth), but I just didn't have any ideas. I took some nice shots of a family of swans earlier today, and I thought one of those would be my Daily, but instead they are here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4211893_mbfEa#315520099_TgaFb

I had to nip out this evening to see someone and post some mail, and on the way past this shop I spotted this. I hope it isn't to prophetic. Now I'm looking forward to an evening watching football on the TV :)
johnloguk > 6.5.08 - Feeling In The Pink! What a beautiful day we've had in the UK today, temperatures into the 70s, glorious unbroken sunshine, shame about having to work in it. After a few days of Dailies that spent a fair time in PS, this pink rhododendron is pretty much straight out of the camera. These are such pretty flowers, but they aren't native to Britain and cause a lot of havoc amongst the indigenous flora. They grow rapidly, block out the light from the forest floor, and do something to the soil that makes it difficult for anything else to grow even after they've been removed. As someone who loves to run through forests, rhodos are also impossible to run through, but they are still beautiful :)
johnloguk > 16.4.08 - Windows to the soul? Not until I clean my glasses anyway :)

Nothing special, but it is me trying not to look too much like a rabbit in the headlights. Maybe I should have blurred the image a bit more? I just hope I haven't damaged my lens by getting this close to it.... Back to pretty landscapes tomorrow methinks?
