johnloguk > 30.4.09 - April

Continuing my series of monthly collages that I hope to put into a calendar at the end of the year. I shouldn't have been surprised by the explosion of wildflowers and blossom during April, but I was. I can't believe that May is almost here, I think I'm gonna need a bigger collage ;)

This collage was done before my photo walk yesterday, so I've added a selection of those shot to my Hartsholme Park gallery, which includes another collage especially for Carole here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/6221276_jhJTP#524790426_7gTtg
johnloguk > 10.1.09 - Is There a Doctor in the House?

I must be mad, 4 SPs on the same photo, you know how much I love them. Thanks to Kerry Ellis, I was inspired by her Daily yesterday to try this. It is more difficult for men to look different or re-invent themselves with a new haircut or clothes. I tend to be hat on/off, shorts/trousers, serious/stupid, and that is it :)

I've sneaked a pic from 1988 into these, I'm sure you can work out which one it is! BTW, my 30 minute challenge yesterday was more to do with not having much time than really wanting to push myself as a photographer. Thanks for the kind words about it anyway :)

Edit; Since I was playing in Elements I decided to make a few waterfall creations here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/6737779_zEp8n#452272608_Xowfv they are a bit more photogenic than me!

The Tungsten Challenge...12/15/08
The Challenge: Show us your interpretation of the word, "Tungsten."
The Participants: Kre8ive, John (300m), The Curious Camel, Creative Deviance, Lady Kate, MyKey, Trevlan, and myself.
The Result: The element Tungsten is also known as "Wolfram", so for a while I wanted to do something signifying a wolf in sheep's clothing (think about it). But then I thought I would try to photograph an electric light bulb, because most filaments are made of tungsten, and it seemed like a good challenge, which it was! To photograph the bulb I suspended it from my cooker hood with sellotape, and backlit it with the cooker hood light. Manual focus, because auto just wouldn't focus on the filament, convert to B&W and add different colour filters. I like the curve details that came out in the glass, but I'm not so sure about the optical illusion that makes the collage look wonky!

The original is here, where the filament is clearly visible; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4328734_9ZqLR#437004854_3xxr5

johnloguk > 8.10.08 - Autumn Lines

I managed to get out for a walk this afternoon to the south of the City. I walked along the low limestone ridge known as Lincoln Edge. It is barely 200ft above the surrounding flatlands, but the views are extensive, serious Big Sky Country. I'm in the process of putting a gallery of these shots together and will link to it from here when I'm finished. But in the meantime here is an alternative Autumnal image for today. Alternate to all the beautiful shots of trees changing colour that is.

Lincolnshire is an intensively agricultural County, and at this time of year the fields all turn to brown after the crops are harvested. Then there is furious activity, raking and ploughing, followed by sowing the winter crops. I like this image for the mass of lines created by the various activities in the fields, and the perspective from my high viewpoint on the ridge. The low light accentuates the shapes and textures, I'm really quite chuffed with this (that means pretty happy by the way!)

I've finally managed to upload the other shots from today here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/6180319_KA93S/1/389753374_T35ap#389753374_T35ap
johnloguk > 11.1.09 - LOOK and you will SEE

I gave myself another little challenge today (glutton for punishment that I am), to bring back an interesting photo from the local nature reserve on a very grey and windy day. I thought I would have to look hard for any colour, and expected everything to be buffetted by the strong wind, I was right :)

But then when I slowed down, and started to take more notice, I spotted lots of small details. Bubbles in the stream, red berries, striking bullrushes, remains of the old ironstone mines half hidden by the encroaching vegetation and this yellow fungus on some of the trees. From more than a couple of feet away this just looks like a coating of yellow paint, but even without a proper macro lens you can see that there is a lot more to it than that. There are also some fresh buds waiting to sprout forth in a few weeks time.

I've added a few more shots from today to the existing gallery here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/5121648_aU8pe#452918430_p8T5F
johnloguk > 28.1.09 - Same Old View, Different Weather :)

You've seen it is sunshine, at night, even with snow, but here it is in drizzle with it's head in the clouds. I had an appointment in town this morning, and on the way back to the car too a few shots in the mist. I haven't got time to process them all now, but this one will do for my Daily today. I've left all the perspective distortions caused by the 18mm lens, as few of the buildings are perpendicular anyway :)
johnloguk > 28.10.09 - Timing

I originally intended taking a new night time image today, but I've been out and about with the kids all day and simply didn't get an opportunity. But that is OK, because my last two pics have generated a lot of comment, especially from people who have never tried this sort of shot before. I'm very evangelical about low light photography, and I know that lots of people are intimidated by it, but there is no need to be.

Here are 3 more shots from the bridge last night, put together to illustrate how the shutter speed controls the image. The left hand shot was taken on auto, which I usually do as a marker to show me the prevailing lighting conditions. It is way too slow to manage hand held, but not slow enough to be very different from a daytime shot. Individual vehicles are still visible, if a little blurred. The other two shots were taken using shutter priority. In the central image anything moving has become invisible, but the light trails from individual vehicles can still be seen. In the final shot it is hard to discern even individual light trails, much longer and they would all merge into constant trails. In all the shots, anything that is stationery looks just the same as it always would. Only movement is altered.

Now is the time to experiment with this. You'll love it, I promise, and you'll quickly start to know what effects you will get, and how to manipulate the effects just using shutter speed. Any issues, please contact me privately, I'd be more than happy to help.

One big tip, don't wait until total darkness. That extra little bit of colour in the sky makes such a difference. In total darkness you'll pretty much only get the light trails.

Apologies that the full exif data is lost in collages.
johnloguk > 1.3.09 - Phew that was close!

I spent all afternoon on a photo shoot in the nearly town of Newark-on-Trent, as opposed to "Nork Noo Joyzee". Don't worry this is a private joke between Bill Pador and me :)

I've got over 300 pics to process now, most of which I'm really pleased with, so it will probably take all night. It should be worth it, the light was great and I hope you like them when I post them. I took this when I was almost back home, how often does this happen? I've cropped it a bit, but otherwise it is straight out of camera.
johnloguk > 26.1.09 - Ghost

This is a taster of my Monday Challenge entry "Motion", which I'll be uploading later. This is straight out of camera, no PS witchery here. I'll link to the challenge entry later, have a nice day :)

My Motion challenge entry is now up at; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/7093288_hSxt4#462181159_54Xzk
