johnloguk > 15.5.08 - One of the joys of occasionally having to work out of town, is the chance to take a scenic detour on the way home. Today I took that chance. I spotted this beautiful cottage on the edge of Donington on Bain, a picturesque village in the area known as The Lincolnshire Wolds. The Wolds are low rolling chalk hills, barely reaching 500' above sea level, with lots of charming villages hidden away in the valleys. I was going to post this photo straight from the camera, but after I'd tried the watercolour treatment on it I knew this would be my DP, I hope you like it as much as I do. johnloguk > 3.6.08 - OK it's a cliche, but it has to be done :) Today has been another miserable wet one, and this evening I was hoping for another atmospheric shot of the Cathedral under floodlights, but from a different viewpoint to the other night. As I drove into town the rain stopped and the cloud lifted a bit, so I lost the misty atmospheric opportunity for another day. I played around with different apertures and shutter speeds, but my main problem was a lack of traffic. More light streaks would have added to this, but at least I got some colour in the sky, which I always like in a night shot. I cropped a little bit off the right of this image, but otherwise it is straight out of the camera. Thanks for all the wonderful kind words over the last couple of days. I'm feeling totally refreshed again tonight, despite a busy day, and I've got plenty of bubbly left :)
johnloguk > 25.6.08 - Lincoln High Street at lunchtime, all of life is here! I get very self-conscious taking shots like this, especially in the climate of madness that exists in the UK around public photography at the moment. Trainspotters have been banned from train stations just in case they could be terrorists, and anyone with a camera in a public place must be a paedophile! There have been several cases of over zealous police officers confiscating cameras, and the public are being fed paranoid fears by the tabloid media. But anyway, I risked it for two shots, even if they were at 200mm and the camera wasn't out for long. Of course, anyone watching me would have thought that was even more suspicious, so you can't win :) You might not see much of me later. Wimbledon and the first semi-final of Euro 2008 on the TV. What is a sports loving boy to do?
johnloguk > 26.4.08 - Jeez, this guy must have been doing some speed when he hit that wall :) This is a sculpture on the wall outside an Arts Centre in town. I was prompted to photograph it after someone posted a stags head as their DP the other day. johnloguk > 21.6.08 - The longest day of the year (and the worst weather for weeks!) I like to mix my Dailies up, and a night shot was about due, but this came about in my usual chaotic way. The weather today has been terrible for the longest day and first day of summer, grey and drizzly without a break. On top of that I lost my house keys and spent most of the day in a blind panic trying to work out what I'd done with them. Eventually, of course, they turned up in the first place I'd looked hours earlier. Trapped behind the drum in the washing machine :) This at least meant that I could go out and look for a Daily, and I hoped to find some nice night-time reflections in puddles, and maybe some blurred figures to add interest. But everyone was inside and Lincoln looked like a ghost town. I quite like this though. It captures the dead atmosphere, and some of the puddles. Hopefully summer will improve from now on! johnloguk > 13.6.08 - Wildflowers in the Round. I've had this as an idea in my head ever since I started making planets. This isn't a planet at all of course, I just hijacked some of the principles of planet making and applied them to a wildflower triptych that I made yesterday. I'm not sure whether to see it as a pretty picture, a piece of abstract art, or whatever.... But I do quite like it, and I hope you do too. I took these yesterday down by the cranky duck, but I couldn't resist trying to do something silly with them today. I wonder who decided to put these questions on the bridge? Why did they do it? What do they hope to achieve? Does anyone take a blind bit of notice? Who cares? Questions questions questions!
johnloguk > 1.7.08 - Pub For Sale! The first day of July has been absolutely beautiful here in Lincoln, and this is one of my favourite places to spend a warm summer evening. Sadly I couldn't stay long as I was due on a squash court with Steve at 9pm :) As a child The Pyewipe was one of the few pubs that I was allowed to go to because we could sit outside. It was also one of the few that my Mum went to, for the same reason. I have sat on this bank watching the boats and swans for the last 40 odd years, but I wonder how long future generations will be able to do the same? A whole series of people have bought The Pyewipe and tried to make a profit from it, but they have all gone bankrupt and moved on. It is currently for sale, and being run by the administrators yet again. In the summer it is hugely popular and must make a fortune, but in the winter it loses money hand over fist. I can't believe that someone with a vision and some business sense can't make a go of this place, but I fear that one day it will be left empty and fall into disrepair. Anyone out there with a cool million or so to spare?
johnloguk > 29.6.08 - A Heath Spotted Orchid. Back to Whisby Nature Park today for my Daily, the same place that Steve and I visited last Thursday. It was still pretty windy, which made wildflower photography entertaining to say the least, but it stayed dry until I got home. I have seen them before, but this is one of the best specimens to date. This is only a bog standard 200mm lens, not a serious macro, so I'm really pleased with the result. I've not had chance to look through the Dailies yet today, so now I'm going to spend a little while catching up :)
