johnloguk > 2.3.08 - Golden Years. Some photos are moments of inspiration, pieces of technical brilliance or snatched opportunities. This one had been meticulously planned for sometime. I have been working out the best vantage points and sunset times eversince I moved to my current home last summer. Mid-afternoon today it was very grey and trying to rain, then suddenly it all blew through and the air cleared. Sensing a nice sunset I grabbed my gear and walked a few minutes to a local hill crest and waited as this golden lightshow developed. It took much longer to select the DP than I spent taking photos, and I will upload other contenders to my Lincoln Sunset Gallery later this evening (see here http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4053411_yY5Qg#260994902 ).

I hope you like this shot as much as I do, and I am so glad that I live so close to this view!
johnloguk > 28.4.08 - Elemental Power. It's been a long time since I had a sunset as my DP, but it is weird how similar this one is to the last one. I've substituted a distant power station for the Cathedral, but the golden drama in the sky is almost identical. It has been another day of heavy April showers, and these always seem to give great sunsets. It was very difficult to get the lighting in this image anything like the real thing, the contrast between light and shade was so huge, but I'm happy with this now. The power station is about 15 miles away, and it was under a big storm cloud making it completely dark. There was rain between me and it, but beyond the station was brilliant sunshine. When you compare the power of humans in the form of the power station, with the power of nature in the form of sunshine and storms, there is only one winner!
johnloguk > 30.6.08 - On Reflection.

There was a time when I dreamed of living on an old narrow boat like this, travelling the waterways from pub to pub. I've had three holidays on them and had a great time. I ought to start saving up for one now before I run out of time I reckon :)

Did anyone else watch the Andy Murray vs Richard Gasquet match at Wimbledon earlier today? What a classic, if you missed it try to catch a highlights show, you won't be disappointed.
johnloguk > 9.3.08 - A contemporary antique! I saw some beautiful old postcards the other day, very evocative in their sepia tones, and I wondered if I could reproduce something similar? Well this is my first attempt, and although I can see lots of room for improvement I think I'll definitely persevere and do a few more.

Here are some more similar "old" postcard scenes http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4483933_WXB8B/1/263769846_55Dw5#263769846
johnloguk > 1.6.08 - Golden Glory. Lincoln Cathedral on a night of drizzle and low cloud. It's been a while since I did a night shot, and this wasn't planned, but the opportunity just presented itself nicely. Last night I won a case of bubbly, which was great, but nothing compared to the news I got earlier this evening. I've just won a Sat Nav for the car! There is a certain irony in this because I usually don't like Sat Navs or GPS systems. My view is that everyone should learn to read maps, and that all this technology makes people lazy. But am I going to refuse my prize? Not bloody likely :)

Anyway, I went for a walk after I got the news, despite the drizzle, and got this nice photo.
johnloguk > 10.2.08 - Fire in the Sky. Blame Lady Kate for this one! Another beautiful day here in the UK, and lots of photo opportunities. I thought long and hard about using this one, especially as it is from the same place as yesterday's DP, but couldn't resist it in the end. I took loads of shots to try and capture this view. It was really difficult getting any sort of balance between the foreground and the incredible sky. I ended up quite a long way away, almost laying on my stomach at 200mm. People couldn't work out what I was trying to photograph, until I invited them to "lay down here with me"! I got a few funny looks, but eventually the assembled throng realised what I was doing!
johnloguk > 28.6.08 - I promised a street shot again today, but I didn't anticipate this :)

We get some great buskers in town, but these guys were something else. I was in the bank round the corner when I heard them start up, and couldn't get out fast enough. My musical tastes are pretty eclectic, and even a lot of the rock bands that I like have folk influences. This was mediaeval folk music, played pretty straight, and they drew quite a crowd. So I thought they deserved to star as my Daily today.

Why am I posting so early? Well, basically I'm looking forward to an afternoon of wall to wall Wimbledon, followed by an evening with Steve forcing down a few beers :)

johnloguk > 26.3.08 - If I looked like this guy I wouldn't keep drawing attention to myself! I've seen these birds down by the University many times before, but in the past they have always either "run" away of curled up into an unphotogenic ball. But this fella was full of self-confidence and attitude. The noise he made even sounded a bit like the velocorapters in Jurassic Park! Anyway, thanks to Rick Willis, and others, because their wonderful birds shots have inspired me to keep trying to capture one of these guys.
johnloguk > 30.5.08 - The Golden Hour. Yesterday was another manic end to a manic week, and I realise that I seem to be writing something similar at the end of every week these days. It's also the second time recently that I've not been able to post my Daily on the day itself. I was completely k*******d last night, and the last thing I wanted was another difficult decision, that of choosing my Daily ;)

Anyway, now I'm feeling refreshed again, so here it is. I chose this one over some nice sunsets and pretty flowers, because it symbolises a lot for me at the moment. In the past, I've been able to seek peace and tranquility and recharge myself in mountains and wild places. But lately I've had neither the time nor the money to do that, and have had to make the most of places closer to home. Combined with the task of the Dailies, this had made me appreciate my surroundings much more. Yesterday was a classic example of this. I finished another long day just in time to get down to the West Common for a stroll at sunset. I'd hoped for some big clouds and spectacular colours, but instead got this beautiful subdued hazy lazy golden hour. I wandered around for a while, but in the end I just sat down in the buttercups and let it wash over me. To be honest, by the time I got home I was so chilled out that all I wanted to do was have a cup of tea and go to bed!
