johnloguk > 17.12.09 - Snow in the Sunset

It has been bitterly cold today, just above freezing but with a biting East wind making it feel much colder. All day blue skies alternated with snow flurries, and it made for an exciting sunset, so long as you had your back turned to the wind anyway!

Thanks for the kind words on yesterday's Daily, it is one of my personal favourites.
johnloguk > 5.6.09 - Getting High

You can safely assume that I didn't take this shot today, in fact it was 18 years ago! This is an old colour transparency that I scanned a couple of years ago, and when I get the time there must be a few thousand more where this came from. I tend to go back through old mountain trips when I'm feeling a bit fed up with things, and the combination of manic Friday and manic hay fever sent me back into the archives this evening. The photo was taken high on Chulu East, a mountain of around 20,000' in the Annapurna Himal of Nepal. The rocky peak behind is Annapurna 2. Some of you know that my remaining ambition in life is to stay fit enough to take my 6 yr old twins climbing in the Himalaya, wish me luck :)
johnloguk > 9.2.09 - Snow and Rain

We woke up to fresh snow again this morning, and although it was cold it was quite a pleasant day. That is, until I decided to go out and get a Daily. I had hoped to take some night snow shots around the Cathedral, but it was raining heavily! The last time I took some photos here I got a ghostly biker zooming through the shot, tonight it was a bedraggled walker. Apart from a crop to get rid of boring foreground this is straight out of camera. Despite me standing over it with an umbrella some rain managed to get on the lens, but I think it adds to the watery scene (well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it).

johnloguk > 8.2.09 - Diamonds Are Forever

Nature's Bling, ice crystals on a log. The sun is shining, but more snow is forecast for this afternoon :)
johnloguk > 7.2.09 - Painting

Just after I posted my Daily for yesterday I went out to make some deliveries and this happened! It is too spectacular to waste so it is now my Daily for today :)

There are a couple more shots of the sunset here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4053411_yY5Qg#468980212_rmSGc
johnloguk > 6.2.09 - Open wide, say "aaaaaah"

Bloody students, instead of going to lectures these ones found time to make an igloo! This might get a comment from Lincolnsteve, as he was a student here not too many years ago. It is over 6' high, and has a side entrance, quite a tidy little abode.

My back is still bad today, but I had to drag myself out for work and this was just begging to be photographed as I drove past. Apologies again for not commenting, but sitting at the computer is bad news for me right now.

There is an alternative view of the igloo here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/6455907_NuREH#468571536_iJ5Dj
johnloguk > 5.2.09 - Icy Lane

We had another 2-3 inches of snow overnight. By the time I'd got my back free enough to drag myself out it had stopped. I would have loved to have taken more shots, but I had too much to do and my back simply isn't up to it. The main roads have all been gritted/salted and are perfectly clear, but minor roads like this are very "interesting" to drive on. Fresh snow on top of hard packed ice, what fun :)

Thanks for the kind words about my back, it does ease the pain a little bit :)

I've added a few more shots from this morning here; http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/6455907_NuREH#P-4-15
johnloguk > 1.2.09 - Snow!

The predicted white out didn't happen today, just a few flurries like this one, but they are still forecasting "the heaviest snowfall since 2003" overnight. Seeing as we have barely had 2 flakes since 2003 this isn't quite as apocalyptic as it sounds, but there is a thin covering all over as I type this, and I'm hopeful for more by morning. It would be nice to start off my second year on the Dailies with a few nice snow scenes :)
johnloguk > 27.12.08 - Maybe Next Year?

Ah well, another year goes by without a White Christmas. This was actually taken in late November, when, for a few weeks, we had freezing temperatures and dreamt of a picture postcard Christmas. I thought you might be interested in the view from my window anyway, even if this snow covering is a bit pathetic. That is my front porch on the right, and my Ford Focus on the drive. I live on the first floor, laughingly called a "coach-house apartment", but basically it is a 2 bedroom flat above 3 garages, I like it though :)
