johnloguk > 17.6.09 - Caught in the spotlight

This is another shot from Tuesday night, but I was still working on it last night. The guy was walking his dog, and I suddenly realised that he was going to go through the glare from the floodlights. I was disappointed with the original, because I didn't have chance to set it up properly and there was some camera shake. I decided to go with an artistic feel rather than a natural one and I hope this works. I used the watercolour filter in Elements on top of a B&W conversion and a simple frame.

Thanks for the wonderful comments on yesterday's Cathedral shot, it is one of my favourite views and I never tire of it. This was taken at the opposite end of the Cathedral, where the lawns and trees create a very different atmosphere.
johnloguk > 3.6.09 - Silence is Golden

It's been a long time since I had a sunset for my Daily, I hope it has been worth the wait. I originally went out for a walk along the river and got some nice wildflower shots, but this presented itself on the way home. I don't like having the sun in the frame, it can make the image noisy, fill it with flare and doesn't do wonders for the eyes, but I hope it adds to the image here. This view of Lincoln Cathedral is from the south-east, with the observatory tower of the Castle on the extreme left of the shot. There weren't many clouds in the sky, but there was a low haze that gave this wonderful golden glow. A group of birds flew over at just the right time too.

I've had lousy hay fever the last couple of days, which has made staring at a computer screen pretty painful, so apologies if I didn't comment on your pics. Thanks for all the kind words on my truck pics and postcards, you are a wonderful bunch of people :)
johnloguk > 18.1.09 - Church on the Hill

Another glorious sunny day here today, so I had to make the most of it, and went for a walk this afternoon near the village of Walesby, about 25 miles NE of Lincoln. The light was stunning, and I timed things to include sunset. This church is on top of a hill, at almost the highest point in the County, and it really is in a great spot. I've got over 100 photos to process and put the best into a gallery, which I'll link from here later. There will even be some interior shots to satisfy the lovers of stained glass on the Dailies :)

The gallery of shots from today is now up at; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/7127583_esapS#457112216_4J8cP

I promise I'll try to catch up with my commenting as well this evening :)
johnloguk > 27.11.08 - Mission Statement

The great thing about photography is that the viewer can see many things in a single image. On Thanksgiving Day in the US, with events in Mumbai and elsewhere, some might see this as a religious or philosophical statement. For me it is simply how things should be, as the alternative isn't worth considering. Today would also have been my Dad's 87th birthday, had he not succumbed to heart failure in 2002, so there is a huge resonance for me today.

But the story behind this particular image is more mundane. I've been looking through my recent Dailies, and there is a definite profusion of pretty pictures. Now I like pretty pictures, don't get me wrong, but back in the day I remember saying something about the Dailies being a place to stretch myself out of my comfort zone. Today just happened to give me that opportunity. A huge storm dropped by in late afternoon, turning the whole world as dark as midnight. But even at the height of the storm I spotted the line of light on the horizon, and the silhouettes of the trees along the Old Coach Road against it. And here it is, my Mission Statement, because things do get better, they have to.
johnloguk > 25.11.08 - Men at Work!

I would like to say that this shot was meticulously planned, but of course I was just incredibly lucky :)

Around sunset I happened to be working near a footpath that runs between some sports fields. I thought that I might get a relatively clear view towards the Cathedral, so set off with the camera. I came to a nice gap in some trees and was looking at what I thought was a large weather vane, then it moved! Then the other guy appeared and I realised what I was looking at. The men working on the chimney are about 200metres away, the Cathedral is about 1km away. 5 metres either side and the guys were invisible, so very very lucky. I am so chuffed with this image, and tomorrow I'm going to see if I can find the workmen and show them this photo. There might be a sale in it :)

PS. I've just noticed that this is my 300th Daily :)
