johnloguk > 1.12.09 - Lights

Back on the streets at dusk today. The building on the left with the green lighting used to be the main Post Office, but now it is a pub. It's amazing how many new pubs sprung up a few years ago when they built the University :)

Thanks for the comments on my latest Nature collage for the calendar, it has been a labour of love and is finally almost finished.
johnloguk > Christmas Lights in Black and White

This was taken at dusk today. Dark enough for the lights to stand out, but still some light in the sky to show the odd texture in the clouds. I'm putting together a gallery of the lights in colour, so I thought it would be interesting to show them in monochrome too.

Whenever I do a B&W conversion I play around with the levels and contrast, and sharpen a bit, or the image can end up a lot flatter. I've added a vignette to this as well, just because I'm going through a phase of adding vignettes :)
johnloguk > The view from my window as I went to bed last night. I was half asleep, and suddenly "inspired" to take a quick shot!
johnloguk > 26.11.09 - See The Light

Another Lincoln Cathedral shot, but I've not done this angle for a long time and this is the first time I've done it at night. This is a difficult shot to do at night. The Cathedral is a long way away, and the camera is always trying to expose for the dark sky. You have to under expose the shot or the Cathedral will be blown out completely. I was shooting across a sports field, and the lights in the foreground are considerably closer than the Cathedral. I had the camera wedged in between the spikes on top of a high metal fence, and it was very cold and windy. Apart from that it was a piece of cake :)
johnloguk > 25.11.09 - Stones, Light and Shadows

I went into town this evening to get some more shots of the Christmas lights. I walked back up Steep Hill and took a few shots around the Jews House, the building on the left. It was built in the 12th century and is the oldest domestic building in the UK, possibly Europe. With the Cathedral just poking above the trees on the hill I thought sepia worked well with this. I had a bit of luck with the positioning of the girls as they walked past the light.

I've added some more photos from tonight in the gallery here; http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/Photography/CHRISTMAS-LIGHTS/10418872_wA9mz#723948638_u9mhV
johnloguk > 24.11.09 - Men in Skirts :)

Shot these guys this evening. They were leading a torchlight parade in aid of a local hospice. There were about 800 marchers so it was pretty spectacular.

johnloguk > 23.11.09 - Christmas Lights

Imagine my surprise when I went for a short photo walk at dusk this afternoon and saw that the Christmas lights were on!

There are some more photos from the walk here; http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/Photography/CHRISTMAS-LIGHTS/10418872_wA9mz#722093968_yCpWB

Somehow I don't think these will be the last either!
johnloguk > A Kind of Blue

This is a shot from a short photo walk I did at dusk today. I decided to leave it as natural colour because of the blue tones running through it. We'd had a big storm this afternoon, and after it blew through the air was cold and very clear. I couldn't believe that the Christmas lights were already up in November, but they do make for a pretty shot!

Thanks to Mary Ann and everyone for the kind words on yesterday's black and white night shot. I'm glad your night shots are working out Mary Ann, it is a lot of fun doing these isn't it? I really hope to comment more myself this week. Now I've got the twins' birthday and various other projects out of the way things should calm down a little bit, until I have to start Christmas shopping anyway!

johnloguk > Night on the Town

I've always loved night photography, but for years (decades actually!) I hated street photography. But in the last couple of years I've learned to love night street photography. As a photographer you seem less conspicuous, and if anyone questions why you were taking a photo of them, you can genuinely tell them that they will be hard to recognise. I love playing with shutter speeds, but even on "auto" you get some wonderful effects at night. Definitely another "something" that every photographer should try a lot more of :)
