johnloguk > 23.11.09 - Christmas Lights

Imagine my surprise when I went for a short photo walk at dusk this afternoon and saw that the Christmas lights were on!

There are some more photos from the walk here; http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/Photography/CHRISTMAS-LIGHTS/10418872_wA9mz#722093968_yCpWB

Somehow I don't think these will be the last either!
johnloguk > A Kind of Blue

This is a shot from a short photo walk I did at dusk today. I decided to leave it as natural colour because of the blue tones running through it. We'd had a big storm this afternoon, and after it blew through the air was cold and very clear. I couldn't believe that the Christmas lights were already up in November, but they do make for a pretty shot!

Thanks to Mary Ann and everyone for the kind words on yesterday's black and white night shot. I'm glad your night shots are working out Mary Ann, it is a lot of fun doing these isn't it? I really hope to comment more myself this week. Now I've got the twins' birthday and various other projects out of the way things should calm down a little bit, until I have to start Christmas shopping anyway!

johnloguk > Night on the Town

I've always loved night photography, but for years (decades actually!) I hated street photography. But in the last couple of years I've learned to love night street photography. As a photographer you seem less conspicuous, and if anyone questions why you were taking a photo of them, you can genuinely tell them that they will be hard to recognise. I love playing with shutter speeds, but even on "auto" you get some wonderful effects at night. Definitely another "something" that every photographer should try a lot more of :)
johnloguk > 20.11.09 - Window on the World

I'm afraid that this is another shot from yesterday, the view from the window of the pub. I've had a really long day today and didn't get chance to take any photos, but I relaxed this evening with a beer and a play in photoshop.

This is my "watercolour" treatment, which some always mistake for a form of HDR, but it is simply a manipulation of shadows, highlights and contrast. The oddest thing about this shot is the absence of people in the street, which is very unusual, but it happened so here it is.
johnloguk > 19.11.09 - I've Been Framed!

When a potential customer asks if you can meet them in the pub it would be silly to refuse wouldn't it?

I love this place. It won awards when it was converted into a pub from an old Cobblers many years ago. There is a tasteful mix of very old, pseudo old and strikingly modern. Oh, and the beer is good too :)

I'm beginning to think someone has put a curse on me. Last week I couldn't access my emails for 4 days. Today Facebook isn't recognising my password. Hardly the end of the world, but damn frustrating nonetheless.
johnloguk > For my first contribution to this gallery and community I thought I'd create an homage to one of my heroes, Don McCullin. He earned his reputation as a war photographer, but in recent years has specialised in atmospheric black and white landscapes. He has inspired me with everything he has done, so this seems fitting :)
johnloguk > 14.11.09 - Look Up

I've taken so many photos from this viewpoint, but this is the first time I've turned the camera on it's side and included the sky in the shot! I was taking photos up round the Castle and Cathedral this evening, trying to find a different perspective, then I noticed the sky. The clouds were moving across like smoke, lit by the floodlights and the trees were swaying overhead. People were all wrapped up against the wind and were shuffling along without taking notice of their surroundings. I think I was the only person who noticed the clouds!
johnloguk > 11.11.09 - Hand Held ;)

This evening I tried something I haven't tried for a long time, pushing the ISO up to 1600 and shooting hand held at night. I usually prefer to keep down at 200, and use the longer exposures to create movement and other wonderful effects. But I did enjoy the freedom of shooting hand held, although the noise was excessive in some of the shots. It isn't too bad here, although the noise reduction filter in Elements helped a little bit.
johnloguk > 10.11.09 - Ghost at the Machine :)

Looks like even ghosts pay to park their cars at night in Lincoln! It wasn't quite as foggy this evening as last night, but it was still enough to create a nice mood for this photographer.
