johnloguk > 28.11.09 - The Golden Tree

This is a panoramic crop of a shot taken this morning on a short walk just outside town. The light was stunning, bright foreground and big dark sky. The Cathedral is silhouetted on the ridge, but the tree steals the show. The Autumn colours are still hanging in there.

johnloguk > 26.11.09 - See The Light

Another Lincoln Cathedral shot, but I've not done this angle for a long time and this is the first time I've done it at night. This is a difficult shot to do at night. The Cathedral is a long way away, and the camera is always trying to expose for the dark sky. You have to under expose the shot or the Cathedral will be blown out completely. I was shooting across a sports field, and the lights in the foreground are considerably closer than the Cathedral. I had the camera wedged in between the spikes on top of a high metal fence, and it was very cold and windy. Apart from that it was a piece of cake :)
johnloguk > 9.11.09 - Fog Lights

Today has been a beautiful one, fantastic weather, nice sunset, but the fog tonight was an extra surprise. When I came off the squash court at about 9.30pm I was hardly dressed for photography in near freezing fog, but I've been waiting too long for some fog to waste this opportunity. So instead of going home for a hot shower I drove straight to the Cathedral Quarter looking for photo opps! Needless to say I was the only person in shorts!!

I got a few good shots of the fog and the golden glow from the Cathedral floodlights, but this one was a real stroke of luck. This is one of my favourite shooting positions, but for 10 minutes I froze waiting for someone to come along and be a "ghost" for me. So I wandered around for a while, and was on my way back to the car when I spotted these two guys heading for my spot. I raced ahead of them (you see the shorts were useful!) and fired 3 quick shots as they approached. One was out of focus, one had lousy comp, but this one turned out OK I think. Straight out of camera, not even a crop, just a touch of in camera sharpening and low light noise reduction. This is a beautiful spot, but when the fog descends it becomes utterly surreal. I'm one photog hoping for more fog this winter :)

Thanks for the great response to my model railway shots, you guys blow me away!
johnloguk > 22.10.09 - Golden

The sun came out for a little while this afternoon, luckily I had my camera with me and was close to this little oasis of Autumn colour. On a housing estate where every other street is named after a literary figure (Browning, Shelley, Marlowe, Burns, Chaucer, Scott, Swift etc), The Oval is an oddity. Houses are arranged around this central area of scattered trees, and at this time of year it is quite beautiful. I'm still not convinced that I've done the colours justice yet this year, but hopefully I have a week or two left.

A special thank-you today to the people who have taken the time to explore some of my other galleries. Lord knows that I've been struggling to even comment on the Dailies, but there are some kind souls out there who regularly delve into the heart of my website and leave wonderful comments scattered throughout.
johnloguk > 15.9.09 - The Kite

I was very lucky this evening. I went to see a customer, but I was early and she was "having her hair done"! So I had some time to kill. I had a drive round looking for photo opportunities, and found some guys flying a large paraglider style kite. It was almost impossible to photograph, I just couldn't get in the right position. But as I was trying the sun went behind a cloud and this happened. So I quickly pulled back from the kite and fired off a few shots before the sun re-appeared. I increased the contrast slightly to accentuate the rays without making it look unreal.

I've been really busy again the last couple of days and only been able to make a few brief comments, so thanks to everyone who has taken the time to comment on my photos.
johnloguk > 23.7.09 - Golden Brown

This shot was taken this evening just after a big storm passed through, from a similar viewpoint to this shot from a couple of weeks ago http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/7240041_kZdsG#584504104_z4gTK

The wheat is almost ready to harvest, and all around the colours are changing rapidly now. If you want to see the view in the opposite direction to this shot then go here http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/gallery/4053630_nJYqk#599858647_baCXs
johnloguk > 3.6.09 - Silence is Golden

It's been a long time since I had a sunset for my Daily, I hope it has been worth the wait. I originally went out for a walk along the river and got some nice wildflower shots, but this presented itself on the way home. I don't like having the sun in the frame, it can make the image noisy, fill it with flare and doesn't do wonders for the eyes, but I hope it adds to the image here. This view of Lincoln Cathedral is from the south-east, with the observatory tower of the Castle on the extreme left of the shot. There weren't many clouds in the sky, but there was a low haze that gave this wonderful golden glow. A group of birds flew over at just the right time too.

I've had lousy hay fever the last couple of days, which has made staring at a computer screen pretty painful, so apologies if I didn't comment on your pics. Thanks for all the kind words on my truck pics and postcards, you are a wonderful bunch of people :)

 The Looking Up Challenge...02/16/09
The Challenge: Show us your interpretation of "Looking Up."
The Participants: Kre8ive, John (300m), The Curious Camel, Bill Pador, Karina, Creative Deviance, Lady Kate, MSpencer, Trevlan, FotoEffects, Hillary, and myself.
The Result: "Looking Up" - Over the last week I've had lots of ideas for this challenge, some literal, some not. But I like this simple shot the best in the end. I placed the camera on the ground looking up, set the self-timer, and here is the result. This is the underside of the roof in one of the entrance porches to Lincoln Cathedral, at night, hence the lighting. I played around with filters, various conversions, but in the end settled for it straight. I love the way the limestone glows at night, the slight asymmetry of the detailing and the shadows.

johnloguk > 9.2.09 - Snow and Rain

We woke up to fresh snow again this morning, and although it was cold it was quite a pleasant day. That is, until I decided to go out and get a Daily. I had hoped to take some night snow shots around the Cathedral, but it was raining heavily! The last time I took some photos here I got a ghostly biker zooming through the shot, tonight it was a bedraggled walker. Apart from a crop to get rid of boring foreground this is straight out of camera. Despite me standing over it with an umbrella some rain managed to get on the lens, but I think it adds to the watery scene (well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it).
