johnloguk > 6.11.09 - Ghostly Goings On :)

At the end of an insanely busy day what better thing to do than create something insane! As you know, I love playing around with movement in low light, and I couldn't find a better therapy this evening. All of these shots were single exposures of 5 seconds. I couldn't decide which to use for my Daily so I put them together like this.

View it as BIG as you can :)

johnloguk > 1.11.09 - October

Last month might not have been as spectacular as October 2008 for Autumn colour, but it was still pretty good, and some of the reds and golds are lingering into November.

The calendar so far is here; http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/Nature/NATURE-COLLAGES-CALENDAR/8057142_2Tkfp#524865489_gekpy

I've already done a collage for November last year, but the OCD in me means that I'll probably make another one this year, watch this space :)
johnloguk > 28.10.09 - Timing

I originally intended taking a new night time image today, but I've been out and about with the kids all day and simply didn't get an opportunity. But that is OK, because my last two pics have generated a lot of comment, especially from people who have never tried this sort of shot before. I'm very evangelical about low light photography, and I know that lots of people are intimidated by it, but there is no need to be.

Here are 3 more shots from the bridge last night, put together to illustrate how the shutter speed controls the image. The left hand shot was taken on auto, which I usually do as a marker to show me the prevailing lighting conditions. It is way too slow to manage hand held, but not slow enough to be very different from a daytime shot. Individual vehicles are still visible, if a little blurred. The other two shots were taken using shutter priority. In the central image anything moving has become invisible, but the light trails from individual vehicles can still be seen. In the final shot it is hard to discern even individual light trails, much longer and they would all merge into constant trails. In all the shots, anything that is stationery looks just the same as it always would. Only movement is altered.

Now is the time to experiment with this. You'll love it, I promise, and you'll quickly start to know what effects you will get, and how to manipulate the effects just using shutter speed. Any issues, please contact me privately, I'd be more than happy to help.

One big tip, don't wait until total darkness. That extra little bit of colour in the sky makes such a difference. In total darkness you'll pretty much only get the light trails.

Apologies that the full exif data is lost in collages.
johnloguk > 28.9.09 - South Lincolnshire

This is a collection of shots from my commission in the South of the County yesterday. It is an area of flat lands, big skies, windmills, country pubs and quiet waterways. I couldn't choose a single shot to represent the place, so you get nine. I still haven't finished putting the gallery together, but you'll be the first to know when I do :)

johnloguk > 4.9.09 - Focus!

This week started so well, but I've definitely lost focus as it has gone along, hence having to post 2 Dailies today to catch up. I thought this was appropriate for my state of mind. I used to be very good at prioritising work, but recently I've tended to do everything apart from the things I need to do. I'm easily distracted, usually by people promising to do things, who then do nothing of the sort. And when those people claim to be friends it makes it much worse somehow. So today I'm desperately trying to get my focus back. I'll let you know how I get on with that tomorrow.
johnloguk > 21.8.09 - Beauty and the Beast

This was going to be a "before and after" collage, but I did one of those a couple of weeks ago, so this title seemed appropriate. This big storm came through early evening, but left us with some huge double rainbows. The bottom image is a two shot photomerge panorama. I tried to merge some of the rainbow shots to get a more complete view of the double rainbows, but none of them worked well enough to use.

Thanks for your comments on my wildflowers the last couple of days, and your kind words following my bizarre flying wheelie bin incident yesterday :)
johnloguk > 1.8.09 - July

Better late than never :)

I had never previously noticed how much pink and purple dominates July, just another nice side effect of this calendar project http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/gallery/8057142_2Tkfp#524865489_gekpy
johnloguk > 25.7.09 - Back in the Day!

I try to post an SP every now and again, but today you get 6 for the price of 1, and they are all more than 20 years old :) This was inspired by an old photo Hillary posted on her Facebook page the other day. Unless I do a lot of scanning I haven't got any that old to post, but maybe one day.

I don't look too different these days, a bit less hair and a bit more weight around the middle!

I've just realised as I was uploading this that I missed yesterday when I was busy with the kids. I'll have to play catch up again tomorrow, ho hum.
