johnloguk > 16.9.09 - Dust Bowl I spent this afternoon taking photos for the local tourist board again, so I'm now going to spend all evening processing them. I hope I got some good shots, and no doubt I will share some of them in due course. But this caught my eye on the way home. It has been very dry for the last week or so, but I was surprised at the amount of dust blown up by this tractor. I only just managed to catch it before he got too far away. I pulled up onto the grass verge, wound the car window down with one hand and grabbed the camera with the other. Luckily I had the longer lens on, or I would have missed it. I'm just amazed that I got it almost in focus, and got some nice composition with the old farm and distant church steeple.
johnloguk > 27.1.09 - Spot the Snowdrops :) This morning was cold and foggy, but the fog lifted just as I was driving past this old church, so I took the opportunity of grabbing a few shots in the churchyard. A common feature of English churchyards is amazing old trees, and there are some real beauties here. If you look closely in the foreground there is also a carpet of snowdrops just peeping through the grass. johnloguk > 19.1.09 - Timeless This is another shot from my walk yesterday, but I was so pleased with the sepia conversion that I had to share it with you in this format. I just love the old tree, I bet it could tell some tales. If you follow the Google Maps feature you will see a very detailed aerial photo, which shows the earthworks of the old mediaeval village around the church. johnloguk > 16.10.08 - Scampton Churchyard It has been a very long day today/yesterday. I probably should have left posting this until the morning, it's 1.30am here now, but I was on a roll so I thought I'd keep going. This photo wasn't planned. I was actually driving along when I spotted a horse standing in a field with a scenic backdrop of trees. I pulled over, took some shots of the horse, then on the way back to the car spotted the old church and decided to investigate. This is Scampton Village church, a few miles north of Lincoln. Scampton is an active RAF base and the current home of the Red Arrows, but during WW2 it was the home of 617 Squadron, "The Dambusters" and all that. Most of the graves in the churchyard are RAF personnel, but there are also 8 German Luftwaffe pilots buried here. Their plane crashed nearby and they were buried here as was the custom of the time. The viewer will make their own commentary of this scene, whether it is a profound statement about war, death, or simply the dappled sunlight and Autumn colours. It was certainly a very beautiful and peaceful place.
johnloguk > 27.7.08 - Classic English Village Church? Yesterday was really hot and humid, and when you can't eat anymore ice creams or drink anymore ice cold ginger beer where can you go to stay cool? Well I decided to explore this old churchyard and get some shelter under the trees. Skellingthorpe is just outside Lincoln, about 8 miles from my part of town. The church looks very old, but it is deceptive. I've found it very hard to get information on it, but I think it dates from the 1500s, although it was re-built in 1865, and again in 1916 after a fire. It is certainly very photogenic. I did several sepia conversions, some B&Ws and a couple of nice watercolours, but eventually went for this one.
johnloguk > 17.6.08 - Timeless Planet. Today has been a weird day, busy busy busy, lots of good things done, but one big frustration - my internet connection! Every time I get logged on the connection fails. It has settled down a bit this evening, allowing me to upload some photos, but I apologise for not getting to comment on as many galleries as I would have liked. I love surfing Smugmug, especially the Dailies. The variety, skill and imagination on show is mind boggling at times, it always brightens my day. Anyway, before the connection breaks again, my session in the old churchyard yesterday has lingered in my mind all day today. The watercolour effect adds to the surreal quality I think.
johnloguk > 16.5.08 - I haven't had chance to take any photos today, usual manic Friday and our first rain for ages. So I thought it was time to do another sepia of something old and lovely. I tried an SP first but it didn't work out ;) The monument on the left is a memorial to men of the Parish who died in the Great War. Sad to think that the bloodbath touched even this secluded village in the middle of rural Lincolnshire. Coincidentally, this morning I had a fleeting chance to take a photo of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight of WW2 aircraft. Today is the 65th anniversary of the Dambusters Raid, and the last remaining Lancaster bomber was given an escort of Spitfires, Hurricanes and a C47 Dakota over Lincoln. Before doing a photoshoot over the dams they practiced on in Derbyshire. Every time I heard their engines coming I rushed for my camera, but never quite made it in time, very frustrating.
