johnloguk > 14.11.09 - Look Up

I've taken so many photos from this viewpoint, but this is the first time I've turned the camera on it's side and included the sky in the shot! I was taking photos up round the Castle and Cathedral this evening, trying to find a different perspective, then I noticed the sky. The clouds were moving across like smoke, lit by the floodlights and the trees were swaying overhead. People were all wrapped up against the wind and were shuffling along without taking notice of their surroundings. I think I was the only person who noticed the clouds!
johnloguk > 10.11.09 - Ghost at the Machine :)

Looks like even ghosts pay to park their cars at night in Lincoln! It wasn't quite as foggy this evening as last night, but it was still enough to create a nice mood for this photographer.

There are a few more shots from this evening here; http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/Photography/MAGICAL-LIGHT/4053630_nJYqk#709507859_Rhrc9
johnloguk > 9.11.09 - Fog Lights

Today has been a beautiful one, fantastic weather, nice sunset, but the fog tonight was an extra surprise. When I came off the squash court at about 9.30pm I was hardly dressed for photography in near freezing fog, but I've been waiting too long for some fog to waste this opportunity. So instead of going home for a hot shower I drove straight to the Cathedral Quarter looking for photo opps! Needless to say I was the only person in shorts!!

I got a few good shots of the fog and the golden glow from the Cathedral floodlights, but this one was a real stroke of luck. This is one of my favourite shooting positions, but for 10 minutes I froze waiting for someone to come along and be a "ghost" for me. So I wandered around for a while, and was on my way back to the car when I spotted these two guys heading for my spot. I raced ahead of them (you see the shorts were useful!) and fired 3 quick shots as they approached. One was out of focus, one had lousy comp, but this one turned out OK I think. Straight out of camera, not even a crop, just a touch of in camera sharpening and low light noise reduction. This is a beautiful spot, but when the fog descends it becomes utterly surreal. I'm one photog hoping for more fog this winter :)

Thanks for the great response to my model railway shots, you guys blow me away!
johnloguk > DAILY PHOTOS SECOND YEAR photo
johnloguk > 5.11.09 - "Remember remember the 5th of November"

OK, firstly, I do know that this photo is rubbish, and I have agonised about posting it, so here is the story...

Today is Guy Fawkes Night, when we Brits "celebrate" the unsuccessful attempt to blow up Parliament and King James by Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators in 1605. Bonfires and fireworks are the order of the day. Well they used to be. These days Halloween has become bigger than Bonfire Night, and the fireworks tend to get spread out between the two days.

This appalling attempt at a photo was actually taken last Saturday, when Lincoln's biggest firework display took place at the local football ground. I've been planning this shot for a couple of years. I worked out the best viewpoint to get the fireworks against the Cathedral, which is 1/2 a mile away from the fireworks, and about 3 from the Cathedral to get things to line up properly. I pulled out of the attempt last year because it was raining and blowing a gale, not ideal for photographing fireworks. This year it was just blowing a gale, so even though I knew it was going to be a waste of time I stupidly gave it a go. Standing on an exposed hillside in a strong wind, it is impossible to keep the camera steady for the long exposures needed to shoot fireworks with a long lens. Short of embedding the camera in concrete there was nothing I could do apart from shoot lots of photos and hope. But this was the best I got out of nearly 100, and I damn near binned this too. It was so frustrating, but I had hoped to try again over the last few evenings. Sadly that never materialised, so I've resurrected this one again, just in memory of old Guy and his misguided friends.
johnloguk > 30.10.09 - Stuck in the Middle With You

Another shot from last night, this one was taken from the opposite side of the car park to yesterday's level crossing pic.

Some of you will have seen the original here http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/Photography/TIME-PASSES/10135831_DCWMi#696842263_9Ymco but I thought it looked effective as a B&W, especially the person on the bike in the middle of all the traffic
johnloguk > 23.10.09 - Power

I'm posting early, well early for me, because today is developing into an even more manic Friday than usual. This is a re-working of a sunset shot from Wednesday, just in case I don't get time to take a pic today. Whenever I take this shot, and I know I've taken many similar ones, I always agonise about whether or not to clone out the transmitter tower. I don't like cloning things out because I want to show what is there, and anyway, I like the juxtapositions here.

The church used to be all powerful, communications has arguably become the new religion, but the sun won't lose it's power for a few more billions years!
johnloguk > 18.10.09 - Planet Lurve :)

This planet was born out of desperation this evening. I've been busy with the kids all day, indoor camping, outdoor archery, Christmas card making (yes, really!) and everything in between! This is obviously a re-working of one of last night's shots, so apologies for something very similar to yesterday's Daily, but I think this works quite well. I love making planets, but they are a bit of a cliche so I don't want to overdo them.
johnloguk > 17.10.09 - Dusk Walkers

I didn't intend another monochrome, but after a long and frustrating day I took a short photo walk at dusk, and this treatment really seemed to suit the image. This is one of my favourite places for photography, by the north-east corner of the Cathedral, and it has featured as a Daily at least twice before. I love it at dusk when the lights have come on, but there is still some colour in the sky. You wouldn't believe there is a road off to the left and traffic lights at my back. You don't have to wait long for people to walk into the image and give it human interest either.

Apologies for minimal commenting yet again, but I seem to be in a permanent state of rushing about and high stress at the moment
14.11.09 - Look Up

I've taken so many photos from this viewpoint, but this is the first time I've turned the camera on it's side and included the sky in the shot! I was taking photos up round the Castle and Cathedral this evening, trying to find a different perspective, then I noticed the sky. The clouds were moving across like smoke, lit by the floodlights and the trees were swaying overhead. People were all wrapped up against the wind and were shuffling along without taking notice of their surroundings. I think I was the only person who noticed the clouds!
