In 1989 a group of us went to Nepal to climb the "Trekking Peak" Mera. Unfortunately we had to change plans when our flight into the mountains was repeatedly cancelled by bad weather. We were lucky to get a permit for Ramdung Peak in the Rowaling region. The Rowaling had been closed to foreigners for over a decade, and only recently re-opened. We were the second group to visit the area after it re-opened, and didn't see any other trekkers or climbers while we were there, very rare for Nepal. The Rowaling is now a popular destination, but in those days it felt much more like the early pioneering days of exploring Nepal. We were stopped 50m short of the summit by sheet ice and a wind chill of at least minus 45 degrees, but the whole trip was a magical one.
