26.02.13 - Night Lights I'd just been to watch the film "Cloud Atlas", it was breathtaking by the way, and decided to take a few shots of the lights around town before I headed home. The cinema is the blue neon left of centre. It was another miserable day of low grey cloud, and the golden glow in the sky is that cloud lit by the cathedral floodlights. In the summer this area will be a hive of activity, but in February it is still too cold to sit outside on those benches :)

Into my sixth year of taking and posting a photo every day. I will endeavor to use a photo taken that actual day, or at least one that was processed that day, but occasionally I will post something from the archives if I think it is appropriate (or necessary). I will also try to post interesting images, but life isn't always interesting so some will be a bit more mundane :)

I live in the beautiful old historical city of Lincoln in the East of England. It always features heavily in my images. If you're ever over this way be sure to let me know and I'll give you a free guided tour :)

07.03.13 - A Matter of Time............

Playing around with different exposure times at dusk down at the university yesterday. Seeing as the exif data is lost when you make a collage I added the shutter speeds so you can compare the results. This is a classic case where you'd normally use a tripod, but there were a series of flat topped bollards in just the right place so I used one of them instead. In an urban situation, with lots of people bustling by, I find it easier and safer to do this rather than set up a tripod and risk it getting knocked over by students :)

With hindsight I would have put the images in shutter speed order, but it was put together in a terrible rush :)

05.03.13 - Portrait

I seem to have been shooting a lot of swans, geese and ducks recently, funny how it goes that way, it certainly isn't a conscious decision. Apart from paid work I shoot what is infront of me at any particular time. Yesterday started and ended with fog, but inbetween was a beautiful bright hazy day.

04.03.13 - Refuge

I got an email last night from a local magazine that is running a series of articles that I've written about "hidden gems" of nature in the area. I sent them in before Christmas and hadn't heard anything since so had assumed that they weren't going to use them. The news prompted me to check out some of the photos that accompanied the articles, and I ended up working on them again to see if I could improve them. This is one of them, gulls at Boultham Mere nature reserve in glorious autumn light.

03.03.13 - For Axle

While out walking Mr Willis yesterday I came across this poem to "Axle", a sadly missed German Shepherd. It is amazing how big a role an animal can play in our lives.

Apologies for my sparse commenting again recently, I've been caught up in so many things, most of them very frustrating, and they are taking up almost all of my time and energy.

28.02.13 - February Swansong

February is usually one of my favourite months, but this year I'm glad to see the back of it. It started off with lots of optimism, I had several meetings that promised interesting projects and lots of work, but none of them came to anything. We also had a lot of cold grey days and it has been quite difficult to motivate myself photographically at times. But, February did end with two beautiful warm days of pristine blue skies, and walking back from town yesterday there was a stunning golden sunset over the Old Fishponds. I took lots of photos of swans silhouetted against the liquid gold water. I'd have liked to have used a bit of fill-in flash to compensate for the strong backlight, but I was shooting through foliage so it would have lit that too and caused a huge distraction.

Anyway, roll on March :)

27.02.13 - Rose

I rarely shoot cut flowers, I prefer wildflowers but will also photograph garden flowers from time to time. Yesterday I couldn't resist the light streaming into our conservatory and the way it illuminated some roses in a vase.
