DailyPhotos > John Bennett  > Photography > DAILY PHOTOS FIRST YEAR
This gallery is now a complete year of Daily photos, and although it has felt like a chore on some days I have to say that it has been great fun most of the time. When I started my intention was to challenge myself to try new things, especially to get out of my landscape comfort zone and make myself a more rounded photographer. I've certainly tried lots of new things, had a few disasters, some near misses, and lots of pleasant surprises. But the biggest pleasure is always reading other people's comments and checking out their galleries. There are so many talented people on here that it beggars belief. I really appreciate any comments, especially the constructive ones. I am now moving on to a new gallery for my second year.........

25.2.08 - Planet Zog! OK, after the gritty realism of yesterday's DP I thought we were ready for a trip through space and time. Apologies to my American friends for decimating an iconic image, but I tried several different landscapes and Monument Valley was the one that worked best. I must admit to being moved beyond words when I was in Monument Valley a few years ago. We got there late in the day and seemed to have the whole place to ourselves. It was a really magical place and I can see why the Navajo people value it so highly.
24.2.08 - Ellis Mill. The grey drizzly weather suited my grey drizzly mood today, but I decided not to stay in being miserable again. A lunctime beer cheered me up, then I walked down the road to visit this old working windmill. It was very quiet so I got a 1:1 guided tour which was brilliant. The mill is kept going by volunteers, and they certainly know their stuff. I've had a bit of a play in photoshop, to add a bit of drama to what was a pretty flat photo to start with, and I'm quite happy with this result.

There is more info on the mill here; http://www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/section.asp?docId=46233
23.2.08 - Well it's the weekend and I'm still riddled with germs. Far to early to hit the beer, so I'm hitting the music DVDs instead. You can see that I have fairly eclectic, and often obscure, musical tastes!
22.2.08 - I've been suffering from "man flu" all day today, and when I did go out looking for a nice photo I didn't realise that my battery was flat! So to cheer myself up I spent sometime looking through old mountain photos, then I thought I'd have a play converting some to black and white. This one, from the Upper Rowaling Valley of Nepal, is probably my favourite at the moment.
21.2.08 - There's some hair in my beer! This is the third time that beer has featured in my DP, I'm going to have to watch that. This photo was actually taken last night, but as it was after midnight it technically qualifies for today. I was struck by the the way the long exposure turned the rising bubbles into hairlike strings. The only light was the candle behind. Yes I know the glass is hardly traditional for drinking beer, but I thought the funny pictures on it would add some humour to the shot.
20.2.08 - Today has been a really flat grey miserable one. This photo is taken on the City's West Common, where people take advantage of centuries old custom to graze their horses for a very small fee. In weather like this I often feel sorry for the horses, but they seem well looked after, and this fine specimen was particularly friendly.

A close, and slightly surreal, contender for today's DP can be found here http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4328734_9ZqLR#256842885

19.2.08 - The white stuff at last! Actually it's only hoar frost, not snow. Unlike yesterday, the sun never managed to break through the freezing fog, so it has been pretty grey all day. This was taken on a country lane just outside Lincoln. The verge is green because of the salt washed off the road by passing cars, otherwise there would be no colour here at all.
18.2.08 - Today has been another beautiful day. Hard frost to start, not a cloud in the sky all day, that low mist that characterises clear winter days, and a stunning sunset to finish things off. I often go for a run around sunset, my favourite time of day, and although carrying a camera tends to break up the run it is often worth it. Today was more photos than running, and I might even have a whole gallery for the rest of the shots (here it is http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4363156_BFbUq#256100460 ). But here is today's offering, another take on "fire and ice", reflected sun and reeds in the icy river.
17.2.08 - Lincoln University across Brayford Pool. After the "beer drinking alien" of yesterday I thought it was best to revert back to my comfort zone today. And anyway, I'd been out of town at a conference all day and forgot my camera, so I only had the opportunity for a night shot once I got back home. This is the opposite view to 7.2.08, with the pub balcony on the white building to the right of the shot.
