DailyPhotos > John Bennett  > Photography > DAILY PHOTOS FIFTH YEAR
This is now my 5th year of shooting a photo a day and posting to this wonderful community. I don't always manage to take something new every single day, but I do try very hard and occasionally my Daily post will be a bit mundane. But such is life, lots of ups and downs, but mainly mundane. I am always my harshest critic, but serious constructive criticism from the viewer is always welcome. I have over 20,000 photos on this website now and would be very honoured if you spent time exploring them too.

Sadly Smugmug no longer uses Google maps, so I am not able to locate my images as accurately as I would like. Older images can still be seen on low resolution maps by clicking on the "map this" feature, but I haven't located newer images as the map quality is so poor.

31.01.13 - Signs of Life

Snowdrops in an English churchyard, the first sign of the changing Seasons every year.

Today ends my 5th year of Smug Dailies!
30.01.13 - See The World Differently

This is actually from a guided photo walk I led a couple of weeks ago, but I processed it as B&W yesterday and did a wider crop than the original. You maybe wouldn't notice but I used a bit of fill-in flash to stop myself being a complete silhouette against the car lights. I could have used more, but was worried about firing a flash into oncoming traffic and risking getting run over!
29.01.13 - He's Behind You........

Mr Willis didn't see the giraffe sneaking up on him :)

Thankyou to the wonderful responses to my winter image yesterday, it was a very pleasant surprise to find it at number 1 when I checked in last night. I nearly didn't take any shots again yesterday, it was just one of those days, so I decided to get some portraits of Mr Willis. At first I was frustrated that he lifted his head just as I was taking this, but I quite like how it turned out :)
28.01.13 - Happy Memories

I'm currently suffering some sort of post snow depression, so I've been working on the snowy pics from the last couple of weeks to cheer myself up. This is actually the left hand image from the 3 shot photomerge panorama that I used for my daily on 14.01.13, with the Monday Morning filter from Color Efex Pro added. I used this filter to great effect on some images last week, so I was keen to see how it worked on a few more. I never cease to be amazed at how filters work well with some images and not others. I like the painterly high contrast result with this image, and the details in the trees, but other images were either washed out or unbalanced in some way.

This must be seen as large as possible to appreciate the details.

Here is another image that I've been working on;

27.01.13 - Thaw!

This is our back garden as the sun rose over the hill yesterday morning, with the remnants of our 5 foot snowman and his trusty snowdog. I know a lot of people are glad of the thaw, but all I can think about is how wet and muddy the fields are going to be now for my cross country runs!
26.01.13 - Animal Quackers!

Yesterday was our last day with snow cover, for a little while at least. I walked along the river into town and the snow was still great to walk on, but on the way home it was getting very slushy, and after overnight rain there is nothing left this morning. These guys were very friendly as I walked past the Old Fishponds near home. You can still see the snow and ice on the ground. I shot this "blind", just bent over and pointing in the rough direction, there was no way I was laying down on melting snow to take it!
25.01.13 - Cathedral

Another shot from my photo walk on Thursday, but only processed yesterday. The balconies on the Double Tree by Hilton hotel are going to be very popular viewpoints for photographers in the future!

Here is a wider view to show where this was taken from;

24.01.13 - Eye in the Sky

Thankyou for the wonderful responses to my series of snowy photos over recent days, especially yesterday's painterly filtered one which has become a favourite of mine too!

This is a new view for me, one I've been meaning to check out for a few months eversince the new Doubletree by Hilton hotel was built opposite the University on Brayford Pool. Their Electric Bar offers stunning panoramic views from it's various balconies, although last night they were bitterly cold and not for lingering!

You can see there is still some ice on the far side of the pool, but it has mainly disappeared in the city centre. Luckily there is still quite a lot on the fields near where I live, and more is forecast tonight :)
23.01.13 - Painted Winter

I revisited some of my winter dog walk shots yesterday. I had the idea of a starker B&W painterly look, and after some experimentation with filters in Color Efex Pro I settled on this. The filter is called "Monday Morning", and this has to be seen huge to appreciate the details. I hope you like it too.
