DailyPhotos > John Bennett  > Photography > DAILY PHOTOS FIFTH YEAR
This is now my 5th year of shooting a photo a day and posting to this wonderful community. I don't always manage to take something new every single day, but I do try very hard and occasionally my Daily post will be a bit mundane. But such is life, lots of ups and downs, but mainly mundane. I am always my harshest critic, but serious constructive criticism from the viewer is always welcome. I have over 20,000 photos on this website now and would be very honoured if you spent time exploring them too.

Sadly Smugmug no longer uses Google maps, so I am not able to locate my images as accurately as I would like. Older images can still be seen on low resolution maps by clicking on the "map this" feature, but I haven't located newer images as the map quality is so poor.

13.01.13 - What's Up Doc?

We finished the pick-up filming for our 2nd Doctor Who fan film "Untimely Death" yesterday. We were done early and there was still light in the sky so we wandered down to the cathedral for a few extra still shots. The Doctor (Spencer Kennedy) and his companion "Alice" (Bryony Roberts) asked if I wanted them to pose in any particular way, I said "no, just do your thing), so they did, much to the amusement of passers by and tourists :)

A few of you asked where the movie can be seen? Eventually it will be released free on the internet, once final editing is completed. Our first film "The Mystery of Rorrim" is available here;

and there is a trailer for the much darker "Untimely Death" here;

Both movies were shot on zero budget with a cast and crew of volunteers, and are practice/fun for bigger projects in the future
12.01.13 - Guess Who?

Now you don't see this every day of the week! Filming the epilogue for our 2nd Doctor Who film was a lot of fun. The only problem with filming in a medieval building in January is the medieval weather, it was damn cold!

We're filming again today in a different setting and time period, so I won't be able to comment much.
11.01.13 - Been Shopping.............

This was a quick throwaway shot on the way through the University en route to my photo walk on Thursday, but I like it so much I've decided to post it as my Daily :)

Night photography gives you opportunities like this, something so mundane, three women walking to the car laden with shopping bags, but at night it becomes quite dramatic.

I saw someone walk under the light and cast a great shadow, and I thought the steam on the left would look great too against the lights, so I hung around for the next person to come along. As luck would have it there were three of them, so three times the dramatic shadows :)

I used a street light identical to the one casting the shadows to rest the camera against by the way. Huge thanks for the comments on Yesterday's pic of the Cathedral, that makes two number 1s in a week!!!
10.01.13 - Cathedral in the Mist

This is from my guided photo walk last night. As forecast it was one of those evenings night photographers dream of, mist and low cloud turning the area around the Cathedral into a magical wonderland of golden light and mystery. This is a new perspective, every time it gets harder to find one, but I keep trying! To get it I had to lay on my back against a wall looking almost straight up, and yes it was taken hand held at 10/16th of a second! I took several to make sure I nailed it, most came out OK, I was braced very tight against the wall with my knees and elbows locked together. I must have looked very weird :)
09.01.13 - The End of a Beautiful Day

I took the dog up the hill hoping for a nice sunset. Unfortunately, at the end of a beautiful cloudless day you are unlikely to get a spectacular sunset, so this is a self portrait trying to add interest to the view :)
08.01.13 - Passing Shadows

This is another shot from the University campus on Monday evening, but I worked on it yesterday. This is another place with wonderful photo opportunities, all those angles and lights and people passing by. It is actually a footbridge over the railway. A shutter speed of between 1 and 2 seconds creates nice "ghosts", and a B&W conversion adds to the film noir atmosphere.

Huge thanks for the comments on my big dusk pano yesterday, it was my most popular image for a long time :)

Late Edit; There is a very different kind of shot from the Uni, only 50 yards away from this image, in my alternative daily gallery here;

07.01.13 - Waterfront Panorama

This is a 3 shot photomerge panorama of the University of Lincoln viewed across Brayford Pool at dusk yesterday. I love wandering around here at this time of day, just as all the lights are coming on. When I was a kid the water was full of semi-derelict barges and surrounded by decaying buildings and railway yards. Now it is the cultural and economic hub of "downtown", and yet some people still bemoan the University being built in the centre of the city.
06.01.13 - Street Corner Planet

It's been a while since I made a planet for my daily. I particularly like the way the building at the top has turned out looking a bit like the famous Flat Iron building in New York. I've been a bit uninspired and lacklustre the last few days, post Christmas blues I think, here's hoping for an improvement soon.
05.01.13 - Flood Plain

Sunset down by the river, you can just see the last flash of the sun through the trees on the right. The river is now back to normal levels, but the fields beyond remain flooded. Everywhere still feels very wet underfoot, a huge contrast to this time last year when we were still locked into an 18 month drought.
