This is also from one of the balconies at the Double Tree by Hilton, same as yesterday's pic, but looking north-east to the Cathedral rather than south across Brayford Pool. You can see some snow left in the hotel car park below. There was another fall overnight, but the weather is forecast to warm up now so expect muddy shots for the next few days :)

I've been taking a photo every day for almost five years and posting to the main Smugmug Daily Community. That has got very large and impersonal, making it difficult to do justice to every wonderful photographer there. So I joined the alternative Daily Post Community as well, to get back some of the more personal feedback that can be missing from the bigger group. I've now been here well over a year, and loving every minute :)

31.01.13 - The Night Train

A shot from last night's guided photo walk, and another new viewpoint! I've captured trains at level crossings, at night and during the day, with normal exposures and long ones. This is a 13 second exposure from a footbridge at the University. There wasn't a lot of ambient light here, I want to try this again a little bit earlier with some light in the sky behind the lit buildings.

30.01.13 - Storm Coming

It was an afternoon of big showers and strong winds. I thought I'd found a nice gap between storms for walking the dog, but I was wrong. We got caught in one big one, and almost got blown off the hill, but we did just beat this guy back home. This is quite a while after sunset, but the clouds were still being illuminated by the sun because they went so high.

When we got home we found that the wind had demolished our plastic greenhouse though, and I now have a major rebuilidng job for today!

My Willis was running out of patience with the damn paparazzi last night :)

It had got late and I still didn't have a Daily, he just happened to be nearby!

28.01.13 - Happy Memories (2)

Now that the snow has gone I've been trying to cheer myself up by working on some of the snowy pics from the last couple of weeks. I had some success by applying the Monday Morning filter in Color Efex Pro to some South Common images last week, this is a slightly older shot from Boultham Park. The filter works well with some images and not others, I think this is one of the better ones, and needs to be viewed as large as possible to appreciate the details in the trees. I think I would have liked a figure on the path, but there is also something nice about the empty scene i think.

27.01.13 - The Last Snows?

This is a 3 shot photomerge panorama taken on Saturday morning but not processed until yesterday. The snow was just hanging on in there when I took this, but the thaw was well under way. It has all gone now, sadly, although many people will be glad to see the back of it. Not me though, I love it, hurry back Winter!

26.01.13 - The Big Thaw Begins

This was the first sign of the snow turning to rain yesterday. It got milder throughout the day, and overnight we had very heavy rain, so this morning all the snow has gone apart from two small piles where our snowman and snowdog used to be :(

24.01.13 - View from Above

This is a new view for me. On my guided photo walk round town last night we went up onto the balconies of a new hotel/bar with panoramic views across the city. This is a close up of part of the University campus, the reverse view of my daily from 11.01,13. Can you work out where the previous shot was taken from?

My commenting has been sparse lately due to various commitments, and I'm posting this late today because our central heating boiler has packed up, not good in this weather!

23.01.15 - Town and Country

This is another shot from my dog walk in the snow the other day, but I only worked on it yesterday. I used the "Monday Morning" filter in Color Efex Pro to get this monochrome painterly look, it has to be viewed huge to appreciate the details.

The composition is different for me, I wouldn't usually leave so much white space on the left, but I wanted to show the contrast between the forest path on the right with the distant town down the hill on the left.
