TWYFORD WOODS - BLUEBELLS : Twyford Woods is just South of Grantham, Lincolnshire in the UK. It is one of several renowned bluebell woods in the area. These photos were taken on the afternoon of Sunday 27th April '08. The display was pretty good, but I expect it to be even better in a week or two, so please come back if you want to see more. And yes, there are some shots of primroses too, it isn't just bluebells :)

GREETWELL HOLLOW NATURE RESERVE : Greetwell Hollow is a wonderful semi-wild area on the NE outskirts of Lincoln, UK. It was formerly ironstone workings, and is now a SSSI (site of special scientific interest) as well as a Nature Reserve. Although it is quite small, you can find limestone grassland, shrubland, streams, marshes and small forested areas here. I hope these photos do some justice to Greetwell Hollow.

Use the slideshow feature to see these images at their best.

GREETWELL QUARRY, LINCOLN, UK : This is the sister gallery to Greetwell Hollow, as the two areas are adjacent. A few years ago this was a working limestone quarry, but the wildflowers are quickly taking over. I will add to this album throughout the year as the colours change. But my main reason for this gallery is to record the beauty of the area before it disappears, as there are plans to build 1500 homes on it!

WHISBY NATURE PARK : Whisby Nature Park is an old sand and gravel quarry to the south-west of Lincoln, UK. Photos from here have featured in many of my other galleries, but I thought it was about time it had one itself. There is a state of the art visitors centre, with a cafe, shop and ever changing exhibitions with an environmental theme. But this gallery will concentrate on the flora and fauna of this beautiful place, and I will add photos on a regular basis.

I am not a wildflower expert, so if anyone can identify those that I haven't captioned I will be very grateful :)

Swanholme Lakes Local Nature Reserve : Swanholme Lakes Local Nature Reserve was formed from a series of flooded sand and gravel pits on the west side of Lincoln, UK. After quarrying finished in the 1960s vegetation was able to colonise and this has resulted in a mosaic of different habitat types in an area covering 63 hectares. The geology is older river sands and gravels over Lower Lias mudstones giving rise to sandy, acidic, free-draining soil. The LNR shares a boundary with Hartsholme Country Park. The flora and fauna are important nationally and locally in terms of biodiversity.

The initial 97 photos in this gallery were all taken on September 13th 2008. I will add to these over time, but there are also some photos from the reserve in my other galleries, especially "My Hometown".

SHERWOOD PINES FOREST PARK : Sherwood Pines is part of the original Sherwood Forest, the mythical home of Robin Hood and his Merry Men. It is the largest area of forest in the East Midlands of the UK with full public access, and includes a Visitor Centre, Cafe, mountain bike hire and numerous other activities. Most people don't stray far from the Visitor Centre, so if you are prepared to walk/bike for a few minutes you can find peace and solitude fairly quickly. The initial 30 photos in this gallery were taken on 19.10.08, but I will add photos as I return to this lovely place.

STAPLEFORD WOODS : Stapleford Woods is a large working forest straddling the border between Lincoln and Newark. It is very low lying and prone to floods in the winter. In the summer it is famous for it's rhododendrons. There has recently been extensive clear felling in the woods, but rather than re-plant more conifers the Forestry Commission is allowing many areas to revert back to natural heathland.

FIVE MILE BRIDGE AND FISKERTON FEN : These photos were all taken on a beautiful cold clear January day. Five Mile Bridge is a famous local landmark, named because it is 5 miles East of Lincoln. It is the only place where the River Witham can be crossed between Lincoln and Bardney, a distance of 10 miles, and even then it can only be crossed on foot or bike. It was recently upgraded with cycle ramps to make it easier for cyclists on National Cycle Route One, part of the rapidly expanding National Cycle Network. It is a beautiful quiet spot, frequented by fishermen, cyclists and the odd walker/runner. The land is very flat and low lying here, with Lincoln Cathedral visible on the hill to the West. The low rolling chalk hills of the Lincolnshire Wolds can be seen to the East.

Fiskerton Fen is a further 2 miles East of the bridge, and is a new Nature Reserve created by the extraction of clay to repair the river embankments. There is a viewing hide built in the style of a Mesolithic hut, similar to those inhabited in this area 10,000 years ago. It makes a nice change from the usual basic hides that are glorified wooden sheds. There is also access to the river bank here, where there is room to moor several boats.

View this gallery in slideshow mode, and enjoy a relaxing walk in the Lincolnshire sunshine:)

The wood and meadows contain a wide range of flora, some quite rare. LINCOLN SOUTH COMMON : The South Common is an area of sloping grassland and scattered trees, facing north and north-west, with wonderful views of the City of Lincoln and the Trent Valley. There are several small ponds, and if you look carefully you can see the remains of an old golf course and municipal football pitches. Horses graze the lower slopes of the Common, and there is an increasing variety of wildflowers as the area is left to grow wild.
