ALL IN ONE DAY : I've been enjoying taking part in the madness that is the Daily Photo quest, but some days I find it very hard to choose just one shot. Today has been the most difficult yet, so I've decided to put a selection of photos together in this gallery. It has been an exceptional day (18.2.08), starting off with a hard frost. There wasn't a cloud in the sky, although a low mist/haze lingered for most of the day. It was quite warm in the sun, but bitterly cold in the shade. Just before sunset I decided to go for a run down to the river, a couple of miles away. I took a rucsac and my camera, and I'm so glad that I did, even if it did break up my running somewhat! I think I'll re-visit this gallery the next time it rains all day!

MISTY DAY : These photos were all taken during the afternoon of 23.12.07, around the City of Lincoln, UK. It had been thick fog most of the day with few views. The fog started to break up in places after lunch, so I went looking for photo opportunities and got these. The shots of the cathedral were taken from the minor road between Canwick and Heighington. The misty sunsets were taken from various different viewpoints along Lincoln Cliff just below Bracebridge Heath.

LINCOLN SUNSETS : My home town of Lincoln is an ancient City, with a recorded history going back more than 2000 years. The cathedral, and old town, are perched on a hill that dominates the surrounding flatlands, despite being barely 250' high. Consequently, Lincolnshire is known as "Big Sky Country", and this is never more apparent than at sunset.

THE BLACK CUILLIN OF SKYE : The Black Cuillin of the Isle of Skye are the most spectacular mountains in Britain. Despite barely breaking the 3000' contour, they more than make up for their lack of height with stark beauty and sheer roughness. The intensely "grippy" gabbro rock creates a rock climber's paradise, while the narrow ridges and pointed peaks are the domain of the experienced scrambler. Few of the summits can be reached comfortably by the average walker, although with experience and knowledge everything becomes a delight. Proximity to the sea means that Skye experiences more than its fair share of bad weather, which gives rise to its nickname of "the Misty Isle", but fine sunny days aren't unkown. Full winter conditions are very rare, but all the more special when they do occur.

ALL IN ONE DAY (part 2) : Sunday November 16th 2008 was a beautiful sunny day in Lincoln. Late afternoon I went on one of my favourite local walks, down past South Greetwell Church to the River Witham. The light was wonderful as the sun dropped lower, but there wasn't enough cloud to give a spectacular actual sunset. But after the sun had dipped below the horizon the sky turned several different colours of red wine and purple. A heron swooped low several times, but managed to avoid getting photographed, and then some students swept by in their rowing boat. The Cathedral stood sentinel on the hill to the north-west, as the lights of the City twinkled on and the light show in the sky got richer by the minute. It was almost dark by the time I left the river. I hope you enjoy this walk with me, and I've linked the photos to Google Earth so you can see where you've been :)

ALL IN ONE DAY (part 3) : This is the third in a series of galleries where the photos were all taken on one day. The day in question this time is Wednesday December 3rd, and what a beautiful day it was! Cold and frosty, clear blue skies, with a low sun giving rich colours and wonderful shadows. Half of the photos were taken near Riseholme Hall, itself the subject of many previous photos and it's own gallery. The other half at Temple Gardens in the shadow of Lincoln Cathedral.

FIRE AND ICE : I spent the afternoon of December 7th 2008 at Hartsholme Park and Swanholme Lakes. It was a cold frosty day of clear blue skies, in fact most of the lakes remained frozen all day. There wasn't much of interest photographically until sunset, when an incredible lightshow started. It became even more intense after the sun had actually set, with colours in all parts of the sky, reflecting beautifully off the ice and small patches of rippled water. This gallery is probably best viewed as a slideshow.

FOGGY DAY AND NIGHT AROUND LINCOLN : These shots were all taken on Wednesday January 28th 2009. It started out a grey drizzly day, and not very photogenic, but on my way back from an appointment in town I thought I'd take some shots around the Cathedral Quarter anyway. It was funny to see the refuse and recycling trucks negotiating the narrow streets, and the cathedral towers always look interesting when they disappear up into low cloud.

But things really got interesting after dark (don't they always!) and so I went back up there and played around with the light and fog!

STANAGE EDGE : Stanage Edge, or simply Stanage (from "stone edge") is a gritstone escarpment in the English Peak District, famous as a location for climbing. The northern part of the edge forms the border between the High Peak of Derbyshire and Sheffield in South Yorkshire. Its highest point is High Neb at 458 metres (1,500 ft) above sea level. Areas of Stanage were quarried in the past to produce millstones, and some can still be seen on the hillside—carved, but never removed because they had flaws in them.

A paved packhorse road ran along the top of the edge, and remains of it can be seen, as can remains of the Long Causeway Roman road which works its way over the edge on its route from Templeborough to Brough-on-Noe, crossing Hallam Moor and passing Stanedge Pole (note the slightly different spelling), an ancient waymarker on the route to Sheffield. Some cairns along the top are even older, and there is a well-known cave in the cliff known as Robin Hood's Cave. More recent features include early twentieth century drinking basins, designed to collect pure rainwater for grouse to drink.

Stanage is a magnet for climbers and ramblers in addition to runners. The Stanage Struggle is a popular local fell race that starts in nearby Hathersage and rises to High Neb before returning to the village 500 ft below. If any climbers come across this gallery feel free to name any of the climbs you recognise :)

RAINBOW SUNSET : 21.10.09 was a very wet and miserable day in Lincoln, but just before sunset I noticed the cloud was clearing from the West. I rushed down to the old quarry, and got there just as the sun ducked under the thick bank of cloud that had covered us all day. It was still raining, so I looked behind me and there was a full arch rainbow. Houses prevented a clear view of it, so I had to run 200yds down the path to the clearing at Whitefriars Pond to photograph the rainbow. It was much too large to get in one shot, even at 18mm, and disappeared quickly after the sun dipped below the horizon. The sunset itself was made more dramatic by fast moving wisps of low cloud, blowing like smoke below the main rain clouds. The colour disappeared as soon as it had appeared, but it was a fiery light show while it lasted. At this time of year the sun sets almost directly behind the Cathedral from the quarry, which luckily is a short walk from home :)
